Treatment Options
Frequently Asked Questions
It is a condition that commonly runs within a family. Pregnancy, contraceptive pills, and sun exposure (both UV and visible light from the sun or light bulbs) can also be a cause of Melasma.
An initial consultation is required to make diagnosis and discuss treatment options. Melasma can usually be assessed clinically, without the need of a biopsy.
- Depigmenting Creams – we usually recommend using the cream for 3-6 months to reach optimum results.
- Sunscreen – sunscreens that are effective at blocking pigmentation are essential as UVA/UVB sunscreens alone are insufficient.
- Chemical Peels – This treatment can only be performed by a trained professional and multiple sessions may be required
- Laser – some types of laser can be effective in treating Melasma.
- Tranexamic Acid – this is one of the most effective treatments for Melasma and is available as oral medication, topical creams and injectables. Treatment courses can last between 2-6 months. This clinic has one of the very few dermatologists in the country with experience in using Tranexamic Acid.
